Environmental Noise Measurement & Assessment
Environmental noise is sound propagating outdoors from sources such as factories, roads, airports and other facilities. We are often involved in assessing the impact of such sounds on noise sensitive locations such as in residential areas or in the location of rural dwellings.
Our work in this field includes preparation of environmental noise assessments, scoping reports and expert evidence at Council, Environment and High Court hearings. Malcolm is qualified as a “Hearings Commissioner”, being registered under the Ministry for the Environment’s Making Good Decisionsprogramme. We have prepared numerous “Assessment of Effects: Noise” reports for proposed activitieswhich are reports assessing the potenital impacts of nosie from propsoed activities and must be prepared in accordance with requirements under the Resource Management Act 1991. We have successfully assisted our clients in gaining consent for projects as diverse as power stations, motorways, schools and childcare centres.
Specifically, Malcolm Hunt Associates have developed highly regarded expertise in the assessment and control of noise from transportation sources (e.g. road, aircraft and rail), as well as from gas fired and geothermal generation plants, both conventional stream turbine and binary plants.

No!seCHECK is an audit service to check that environmental noise levels (outdoors) are within the relevant noise emission limits. In many cases, we measure the sound levels and undertake technical assessment as per published noise criteria for that site or facility. This service is popular for organisations or companies who are undergoing due diligence or assessing themselves as part of the ISO 14000 accreditation process, which is a method a company or organisation can use to set up an effective environmental management system.
We are an official advisor to the eco-Portal group of companies who are specialists at providing methods to analyse and document an organisation’s environmental performance using the ISO 14000 process or other programs.
The No!seCHECK package can also be used to check noise levels in the workplace and report on the risk of hearing damage as part of an organisation’s health, safety and employment processes.

No!seMANAGER is an ongoing service that we offer to manage your noise. In gaining resource consent, consent holders are often left with some onerous obligations to manage and monitor noise. In some cases, it is a requirement that a Noise Management Plan be implemented as part of the approved operations.
We have tailored this service to take the weight off consent holders by undertaking the necessary noise monitoring, recording, documenting, etc. ourselves as an agent for the consent holder. These are often ongoing relationships, whereby monthly reports are provided, working with Councils and the consent holders, to ensure that all regulatory obligations are met, while also being responsive to community needs in the event of any noise complaints being received.

Building Acoustics
We provide advice on acoustic design to control sound within buildings, to prevent the entry of sound into buildings, and in the case of noisy equipment or processes, to keep sound contained within a structure. We provide Acoustic Design Certificates, which entails reviewing your building plans and specifications in order to calculate compliance against specific insulation and other requirements.
Noise Control Engineering
We have been involved in the designing, specifying and testing of a wide range of noise control installations, such as silencers, barriers and enclosures. We aim to identify all cost-effective noise control solutions that are durable and practical. We strive to provide the client with options for efficient and effective noise control wherever possible.
